How do you encourage your student/child?

What do you do to help encourage your college student, when they are stressed about their workload, upcoming quizzes/tests/projects, and other academic responsibilities?

2018-2019 School Year

Thelma P. Sturrup-Bosfield

I encourage my son to enjoy the college experience. While he must do his work, he should enjoy every aspect of college including, meeting new people, join groups that travel away from campus on weekends, and get involved in things that are happening on campus, especially social events on Saturday evenings.

Lorna Thurton

Listen to all concerns and have specific prayer for each together and offering support.

Jennifer Stewart

I send encouraging or quirky text messages.

Ninfa Weathersby

I use stories from the Bible that are similar to the problems she might be facing and remind her of how God deliverer them from that problem.

Jane Kang

Pray with them every morning. They esp. appreciate prayer on test days.

Look for campus resources to help meet their needs.

Act as a sounding board.

Send care packages during exam time

Texting words of encouragement and cheer, relevant bible verses or spirit of prophecy quotes.

Debra Bahimba

As we know the students get busy during week and don’t have time to always get on the phone and talk. So About twice a week at about 5:30am I will text Gerry an inspirational statement or scripture or just a quick word of prayer and it the first thing he will read in the morning when he wakes up. He loves it.

Ingrid Slikkers

*short texts with hearts, simple "I love you"

*reminders that they are kept in prayer

* remembering to ask about specific things such as "how did your test go" versus general "how are things going?"

Shirlean Seawood

I text an encouraging scripture most mornings during the school week; Or encouraging quotes.

Mail a “Hello” card once a month.

"I always encourage good study habits (with proper time management and prioritizing assignments) to avoid getting in tight places regarding the convergence of multiple deadlines. That being said, I tell my son to LIGHTEN UP! One bad test or grade is not going to ruin your life You are college to learn about yourself, life, what you want for your future. You aren’t suppose to have all the answers or get everything right the first time. MY standard- graduate on time, don’t repeat any classes; everything else is you putting pressure on yourself."

"I encourage Ryan to seek help as soon as he sees that he is having a problem in a class don't wait ....if you don/t understand something ask for help immediately and use tutors if you still don't understand something most classes will have tutors available in the class or the teacher may have hours to help and they have tutors available at the career center? may not have the correct name but their adviser can help with tutor support as well. Also organization is key when your classes and get your schedules of tests/quizzes and projects you need to mark it on your calendar when things are do and give yourself ample time to prepare don't procrastinate or wait till the day before or the last minute-use your time wisely. After each day try to set aside time to go over the material for that day when it is fresh in your mind and then when your preparing for a test or quizz the material is not foreign to you because you have been studying and keeping up so it is more like a review.... Time management is key but if you keep up daily it will help tremendously when test time comes"

"Basically, I have been singing the same song. Keep your end in mind...Time management, neat legible note taking skills, seek help early-because there is no shame in seeking help whenever difficulty arises. Try your best and do your best...we are paying for all of this. Arrange productive small (3 or 5 student in that class only) study groups EARLY. Drink plenty of water, eat your meals (no skipping breakfast), avoid sweets much as possible. Remember to take10 minutes study breaks because your brain gets tired and needs to regroup. Avoid staying up late...because a tired body and mind cannot FOCUS. Pray before and after you study. God can only bring back what you have study. Keep these text in visible on a note card or memorize."I can do all things through Him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you Hope and a Future."Jeremiah 29:11"

"I encourage Shelbi to challenge herself to see the positive side. If she gets a lower grade on an assignment/test I tell her that is an opportunity to connect with her teachers and to work together to identify ways to improve. Randomly I send her positive thinking college quotes and always tell her why specifically I love her and in what ways I see her really growing through her experiences. I ask about and show an interest in her friends as well as the extracurricular groups and their projects that she is involved in. I also tell her to “treat ‘yoself” when she gets a good grade or is feeling stressed or just needs to shake things up a bit (she likes smoothies from the Gazebo)."

"I send encouraging scripture texts most days first thing in the morning. I help them understand that they don't have to beat their-selves up over not doing as good on a quiz or test as they would like. Just re-group, and work hard to do better the next time."
